The upcoming launch of GPT-4 will provide a significant upgrade to the already impressive ChatGPT tool, but access to it will initially be limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and developers using the ChatGPT API, according to OpenAI's website.

Currently, most users rely on the free preview of ChatGPT powered by OpenAI's GPT-3.5 model, which gained widespread popularity despite some notable flaws. However, the successor GPT-4 is expected to live up to the high expectations set by its predecessor.

Although OpenAI has released some details about the new features of GPT-4, there is still much to be revealed.

WHAT IS GPT-4?

Generative Pre-trained Transformer, or GPT for short, is a neural network that employs machine learning to comprehend data and produce answers. It is most famously recognized as the language model that supports the well-known chatbot ChatGPT. GPT-4 is the newest version of this model and represents an enhancement over the GPT-3.5 model that drives the free iteration of ChatGPT.

WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT GPT-4?

With over 175 billion parameters, GPT-3 was already an impressive neural network that provided quick responses to prompts. However, with the release of GPT-4, this number is expected to increase, resulting in more accurate and focused responses. OpenAI has confirmed that GPT-4 can handle input and output of up to 25,000 words of text, which is over eight times the capacity of ChatGPT's GPT-3.5 model.

GPT-4 also brings multimodal functionality to the GPT model, allowing it to process not only text but also images. While the AI chatbot model can currently only respond in text, Microsoft believes that this feature could eventually enable GPT-4 to process video input.

The upgrades to GPT-4 are highly relevant for the new Bing search engine featuring ChatGPT, as Microsoft has confirmed that it has been secretly using GPT-4. These upgrades are significant since search engines need to provide accurate results in various formats, such as text, images, and video. Microsoft aims to develop a multimodal AI and, in addition to GPT-4, has been working on the Visual ChatGPT tool that enables users to upload, edit and generate images within the ChatGPT platform. This multimodal functionality is necessary for Microsoft to keep pace with the competition since Meta and Google's AI systems already have this feature, albeit not publicly available.

There are rumors that the latest version of the GPT model can converse more naturally and sound more human-like. There is even speculation that it may be the first AI to pass the Turing test, sparked by a mysterious tweet from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman.

Although OpenAI has not explicitly confirmed this, they have reported that GPT-4 performed significantly better than ChatGPT in the Uniform Bar Exam, placing in the 90th percentile, and in the Biology Olympiad, placing in the 99th percentile, thanks to its multimodal capabilities. In contrast, ChatGPT only placed in the 10th percentile for the Bar Exam and the 31st percentile in the Biology Olympiad.

WHAT CAN GPT-4 DO?

During a recent livestream for GPT-4 developers, OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman showcased some of the impressive new features of the updated language model, including its multimodal capabilities that provide context for images and enable website creation.

During the demo, Brockman uploaded an image to Discord and the GPT-4 bot accurately described it. He also asked the chatbot to explain why an image of a squirrel holding a camera was funny, and the AI responded with a humorous explanation based on typical squirrel behavior.

But the most impressive part of the demo came when Brockman uploaded a picture of handwritten code to GPT-4 and ChatGPT was able to create a simple website from the contents of the image.

As developers begin to test GPT-4 in the real world, we can expect to see the latest version of the language model put to even more creative uses.

HOW TO ACCESS GPT-4

Currently, there are a limited number of ways to access the GPT-4 model, and they are not accessible to everyone.

If you have been using the new Bing with ChatGPT, then congratulations! You have been secretly utilizing GPT-4 all along. However, if you haven't been using the new Bing with AI features, you can follow our guide to join the waitlist and gain early access. It appears that various entities, such as Duolingo and the Government of Iceland, have been using the GPT-4 API to enhance their existing products. It is also possible that GPT-4 powers Microsoft 365 Copilot, although Microsoft has yet to confirm this.

Besides the new Bing, OpenAI plans to offer GPT-4 to ChatGPT Plus users and developers using the API. So, for the time being, if you want to use ChatGPT-4, you will have to pay for it.
